Founding Director Of WAGMC, Prof. S. Fiifi Ofori-Acquah Appointed To Top US Research Agency Council

Professor Solomon Fiifi Ofori-Acquah, the Founding Director of the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) and former Dean of the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences at the University of Ghana, has been appointed to serve on the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Advisory Council, the United States Health Research Agency Council. The appointment begins immediately and ends October 31, 2026.

WEST AFRICAN GENETIC MEDICINE CENTRE (WAGMC) PRESENTS LAPTOP FELLOWSHIP AWARDS TO UG GRADUATE STUDENTS

The West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) has awarded 75 laptops to 75 Postgraduate Students from various departments at the University of Ghana, in support of the Vice Chancellor’s ‘One student One laptop’ (1S1L) initiative.

The 1S1L initiative, is aimed at providing affordable and free laptops for students in general and especially for less privileged  students of the university to enhance teaching, learning  and research and to build an inclusive digital technology community.

The first Professor of Medical Laboratory Sciences and the Director of the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) at the University of Ghana, Prof. Solomon Fiifi Ofori-Acquah delivered his inaugural lecture on the topic, “A Journey with Sickle Cell Disease, around the World and a Return Home to Help Find a Cure.” The lecture was a culmination of years of dedication and research by the former Dean of the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences.

Sod-Cutting Ceremony Held to Construct WAGMC Multipurpose Genomic Medicine Building Complex

The West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) has organised a sod-cutting ceremony to commemorate the upcoming construction of its Multipurpose Genomic Medicine Building Complex.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, was hopeful that the facility, when completed, will assist WAGMC in contributing to the Six Key Strategic Objectives (KSOs) in her vision for the University of Ghana. Prof. Amfo announced the building will augment impactful research in the applied sciences and humanities. “I am confident the global leadership in Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) research that the Centre is renowned for will not only continue but grow especially in genomics”, she said.

Prof. Solomon Fiifi Ofori-Acquah Appointed President of the Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana (SCFG)

The Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana (SCFG) has announced the appointment of Professor Solomon Fiifi Ofori-Acquah as its new President with immediate effect.

In his new role he will provide overall executive leadership at the SCFG succeeding the late Professor Kwaku Ohene-Frempong who recently passed away.

In his remarks to Board Members and Staff of the Foundation, Prof Ofori-Acquah shared some of his experience working alongside Professor Ohene-Frempong for nearly 30 years. He stated “I am honoured to continue and grow the work started by my friend and mentor and excited about our mission to support the development of resources and services to help improve the health and quality of life of people with SCD and related conditions”.

Professor Ofori-Acquah Awarded an NIH Multimillion Dollar Grant to Sequence the Whole Genome DNA of Children with Sickle Cell Disease in Ghana

Professor Fiifi Ofori-Acquah, Director of the West African Genetic Medicine Centre (WAGMC) and Dean of the School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences (SBAHS) has been awarded a $3 million grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA to sequence the whole genome DNA of children with sickle cell disease (SCD) in Ghana. The grant application was submitted through the University of Pittsburgh where he holds a joint appointment as Associate Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics.
